Three key insights from Spectrum Networks’ ‘Securing your AWS Cloud’ webinar

On 27th June, ITP.net, together with Spectrum Networks, hosted a webinar with their Sr Technical Consultant, Ankit Sharma, to discuss how regional businesses can elevate their security postures in the AWS Cloud. Here are some of the insights shared at the virtual event.

With Amazon Web Services (AWS) set to open a Cloud Region in the UAE, organizations in the region have the unique opportunity to embrace new cloud innovations. However, as they take the next step in their journey to the cloud, they need to understand that ensuring cybersecurity is equally important.

Whether a business is looking at migrating to the AWS Cloud or already has a workload running on AWS, securing data and resources should be at the top of their organisation’s agenda. This means that having access to information and the right training is integral to improving their current security posture.

Shedding light on this, ITP.net, together with Spectrum Networks, hosted a webinar and delved into how regional businesses can effectively plan their security approach in the AWS Cloud. The virtual event was led by Ankit Sharma, a Senior Technical Consultant at Spectrum Networks. In case you missed the insightful virtual session, here are three key insights from the webinar:

Raising your cloud security posture – everyone is responsible

By shifting their environments to AWS, organisations can rest assured that they can run their business flexibly and securely. Furthermore, with the current and upcoming AWS Cloud Regions in the Middle East, regional firms can improve their abilities to meet core security and compliance requirements, such as data locality, protection, and confidentiality.

During the webinar, it was highlighted that security and compliance are shared responsibilities between AWS and the customer. “AWS is responsible for ‘Security of the Cloud’, while customers are responsible for ‘Security in the Cloud’,” explained Sharma.

He added, “This means that AWS is responsible for protecting the infrastructure that runs all of the services offered in the AWS Cloud. As for customers, since AWS allows them to leverage the different services on offer depending on their requirements, they oftentimes have customised deployments. Therefore, they are responsible for protecting and managing the services that they select.”

AWS offers a variety of tools and services to help you stay secure

AWS enables organisations to build and scale applications quickly. However, as with any technology, adding new tools and services introduces new security challenges. AWS provides many different security tools to help customers protect their AWS environments.

Sharma highlighted that AWS offers tools such as Identity and Access Management (IAM), Amazon CloudWatch and AWS CloudTrail among many others.

“These tools help organisations have visibility of their cloud environments,” he said. “With these solutions enterprises are able to ensure that they’re compliant with the different regulatory requirements that they need to adhere to. Additionally, it can help them perform the right security audits and identify key areas where they may have gaps.”

Security is a journey and not a destination

Once you have the technologies in place and leveraged the latest compliance, monitoring and management tools in the market, do the conversations about security end there?

The answer is ‘no’.

Sharma noted that organisations need to understand that threats will continue to grow and security requirements will constantly evolve. Therefore, security should always be on the top of the list.

“When you have the AWS Cloud security tools and processes in place, there are steps that you can take next to continue to elevate your security posture,” he said.

“There are several training resources available such as the AWS Security Fundamentals. There are also training programmes that provide deeper insights related to the security aspect of AWS Cloud. Businesses also have the opportunity to reach out to AWS experts and training partners like Spectrum Networks to enroll in more in-depth training and certification programmes to boost their technical skills in AWS Cloud Security.”
